ooo I got a prob with my baby its a 1991 Pontiac Tempest with 363109 miles with a 3.1ltr V6... out of the blue whenever it wants it stalls, i have taken it to 4 GM dealership, 7 mechanics and none can figure out why its stalling ???? I just spent about $1900 in Original Replacement parts and had to have my cooling fan rewired due to the lack of sence GM had in fishing the wire around the Exhaust Manafold ( melted )

here is a list of replacement parts just installed in the last 2 months
Direct Ignition Module
3 Ignition coils
battery
main Positive battery cable
computer
MAP
Air temp sensor
both AC temp sensors
O2 sensor
wires
Plugs
Cooling fan
Transmission position switch
running dailight module that has the tailight/running lights disabled
Power trunk module/switch
headlight switch
80amp alternator to 120amp
cirpintine belt
AC compressor
Air Fileter
Both Fuel Filters
Fuel pump
Harness for the fuel pump
Engine oil
Tranny fluid/filter
Rad fluid
Power steering Pump
Fuel Injectors
(other stuff)
rims, tires, brakes, ignition key set ( original wor down and slipped so no key was needed to start the car)
The Car has a Stock Baretta Exhaust from the manafold to the back Speedy ( Muffler guys) didn;t have mine in stock for the warrenty replacement so they said for $180 more they would replace all the piping including the Cat to a Baretta

I had the engine tested for the compression and cyl 4 is just a touch under normal ( stock ) and the car blew some surprising numbers for the emissions ( Almost nothing )
Click here for the Emission report (http://www.resellersinc.com/emis.jpg)

if anyone can help me remidy this it would be great

Very impressive list. They missed a crank sensor. This will cause the car to stall when hot. I think what you have there is an intermittent problem. Intermittents are very hard to diagnose, hence the long list of repairs. Normally I'd replace it with an ignition module. Did They? It's $85.00 Canadian.

I have the old one sitting in front of me the 3 coil Packs and the ignition modual) which is perfectly fine I had it temporarly put on my GF's car ( same engine and car except its a 91 Chev Corsica and hers ran fine with it so I kept it as a spare.... hrmm its apin in the butt I know that when it runs fine the car FLYS then when I go to stop it will stall... I pulled out of my driveway while rolling back it stalled, I turn a corner it stalls I just don't understand why ????

try having your manifold checked for leaks. i have a 94 grand prix whith a 3.4 V6, and I ahd the same problem. I'd stall when I came to a stop for longer than 15 sec. Tell the mechanic to hook a vacuum pump to your manifold. If you don't feel like spending a hole lot of money, buy a can of starting fluid/carb cleaner. Spray it on your manifold while the car is running, if it dies or revs up you have a vacuum leak.

well we located the problem it seems the computers Idle setting got messed up in the computer so it would idle the engine below the stall line... also we had a 3 month old failing fuel pump which would be the bright eyes who damaged the pump installing it.... one thing I have learned NEVER EVER take your car to a general mechanic thats like taking your tv to a fridge repairman... I had to get my car recertified ( new fule filter bracket, fule line ( they nicked it badly) left rear brakes where they didn't remove the bu8ilt up dust and dirt that was embedded in the pad..... the car has givin me more then what I paid for it.. to be honest the car took one hell of a beating when my mother drove it and its still runing not even her old honda (car before the tempst) withstood the beating...

all and all everything is completely fixed on the car and I now keep a spare computer in my trunk ( minus the eprom which is programmed spicific to each engine)

What transmission do you have in it?? Is it a 3 speed or 4 speed or manual??

The 3 speed trans has a known problem of the TCC soleniod sticking causing a stall at stops. It is like not putting the clutch pedal down and stopping. Does the car start right back up? Does it stall in gear agan??

4 speed auto... the tranny does your usual jolts when you let off the gas and press again but thats also a common problem with those trannies :) its not the first i have seen but it is a warning sign that its getting up there in age and will get worst after time but I am attempting to loacate a 5 speed manual for it :)
