2.2L engine: Warm motor restart problemicechopper26 06-21-2003, 12:16 AM My 91 Accord has issues restarting after the motor is warm. Here are my problems and others that discribe the same problem. This must be common. Does anyone know the solution? Here are the others: 1988 Honda Prelude SI - by car455 on 2:52PM Mon 6/16/03 i am having a problem with my prelude not starting after it has been running. When I have been driving then have to stop and turn off the engine, sometimes it just wont start. It turns over but will not start. Could it be spark plug wires? or something else. ???? Re: 1988 Honda Prelude SI - by car410 on 10:43AM Thu 6/19/03 I am having the exact same problem with a 1990 Honda Accord. Would appreciate a reply from anyone who has resolved starting problem as it could be caused by a variety of things (main relay, distributor, ignition coil). <icechopper26> I have a 91 Honda Accord with a 2.2L motor. The issue that I have and also a friend with the same model is that once the motor is warm and I do a quick trip, the motor may fail to restart. It appears to be temperature related because once the vehicle is allowed to cool (like I have a choice) it will restart without any problems. The engine has never failed while running. Have you heard of this before? This same thing happens to two different vehicles. accordztech 06-21-2003, 03:23 AM for the accord 4th gens and many other problems with warm cars not starting it usually can be the main relay assembly. this controls the fuel pump...it will just crank but wont start if its getting old. i had this problem in my accord. none now. similar problem in my uncles to. he replaced his coil, cap, rotor, sparks, and many many other things. mostly this might solve all the probs in ur car...nice to do a tune up as well. icechopper26 06-21-2003, 10:12 AM Thanks Ztech. I'll concentrate on the relay next time it happens. That makes sense because the motor will stumble on the first attempt to resteart, then nothing. Thanks again. bx10466 06-22-2003, 12:19 PM Ok, I hear you when you say it won't turn over but I need to understand if we got the same problem. After I turn my car off it starts but shuts right off and the it won't start for a couple of minutes, same problem or no? b16a3sol 06-22-2003, 06:17 PM it could also be as simple as vapor lock. try replacing the main relay to see if it alleviates the problem. if not, try and find a way to keep the fuel lines cooler. icechopper26 06-23-2003, 10:51 AM Same problem. The starter turns the motor over but it won't start. icechopper26 06-23-2003, 11:00 AM I believe vapor lock won't occur with a pressurized fuel system. The fuel pump in the fuel tank takes care of this issue. It seems like an electrical problem that may involve the fuel circuit though. The main relay is under the dashboard and not exposed to engine heat but it certainly could be the problem. This issue is a common problem. I'm just trying to flush out the proper solution without using the shotgun approach. Somebody knows the answer about this. Please feel free to slam me if my vapor lock ideas are all vapor. imports_only1 06-23-2003, 06:00 PM it's definitely the main relay. had the same thing happened to my 93 Accord but after changing the main relay, no more start problems for the last 3 years. bx10466 06-23-2003, 10:47 PM Thanks, I'm gonna try the main relay. It's crazy because it shuts off at the wrong time. How much will that set me back and can I do it myself? imports_only1 06-23-2003, 11:41 PM the main relay will probably cost around $55-75.00. it depends where you get it from. it's easy to change it. but i didn't know that so i paid the local dealer to do it. the relay is located behind the coin box. all you need to do it look under the steering column and you will see it...it's a small rectangular plastic box, kinda small, with a plug on one side. you just unplug it, take it out and switch the new one it. that's it. bx10466 06-24-2003, 09:54 PM You make it sound easy enough so I am going to buy it throw the bitch in myself... Thanks:bigthumb: AZNDAWGCHOPSTIX 06-26-2003, 04:02 PM hey well it could be your battry wire or your starter cuz happen to me i clean out my batrry wire and got a new starter and it work fine start faster heathershonda 06-26-2003, 10:03 PM Yep, samething happened to my car couple of days ago. Going to replace the main relay, that's the only thing that hasn't been replaced yet. Has to be that. icechopper26 09-19-2003, 01:57 AM Replace the Main Relay. It is located up underneath the left hand dashboard coin tray. If your car is having similar symptoms, replace the main relay FIRST! It will save you a bunch of $$$. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
