Fan switch on 97 Blazer 4WD

I could see smoke coming out of the fan switch. Quickly put it off. Now is it the switch or the relay at fault. How do you remove the switch. I am little scared to fiddle in this area because of the air bag. But can learn quickly with a little guidance.

disconnect the battery for 15 minutes, pull the dash cover, pull the fan controls, put new controls in, put cover back on, reattach battery
