Weight reduction on a road carSlip 11-12-2001, 03:07 AM Is there any way of making a road car lighter apart from the usual Removal of A/C system, taking out seats and interior? Im just curious....... zapf 11-12-2001, 08:03 AM You can replace your glass with lexen... $$$ Slip 11-12-2001, 09:34 AM Hah i thought of that but it wouldnt drop much weight. What sort of 'diets' do race cars go on? Where do they drop all their weight from? YCEE 11-12-2001, 04:05 PM Change the bumper, bonnet, trunk and doors to Carbon Fibre material, that should drop a LOT of weight. There are also many aftermarket parts that are marketed as 'Ultra light', just to name a few like Exhaust, Wheels, Intercoolers. R33 11-12-2001, 07:39 PM Hey YCEE, good to see yet another M'sian on board. Where are you? I am in KL. I am going to the track on Deepavali day (Sepang). See you there? You are right. Change the bonnet, boot lid, doors, dashboard to CF. Electra made CF bonnet, doors etc. They would shave at least 50% of the original weight. I use Top Secret FRP bonnet which is only 3.4kg - original alluminium is 8kg. Race cars also strip the interior to the bone. No dashboard at all. No door panel, carpet etc. Some people even scrap the body to make it thinner! SlowGts-t 11-12-2001, 07:41 PM Im Malaysian too! er.. but overseas R33 11-12-2001, 10:02 PM G8! Slip 11-12-2001, 10:22 PM Hey thats good thinkin YCEE I could prolly lose 10kg on the exhaust alone. Thanks guys. zapf 11-13-2001, 12:14 AM I guess you have no idea how much glass weight then? They are heavy! Zapf Slip 11-13-2001, 06:05 AM I spose, if you did the windscreen and rear window as well. Yeah the lexen would be a lot lighter, is spose, i was thinking if it was just the windows, mine arent that heavy. What do you reckon, 10kg in changing the glass to lexen?? Air Filter, Exhaust, Boost Controller, AFC... doing about 380hp on the dyno. How about yours? BTW, where did you get your Top Secret bonnet? I'm planning to get one too to chase the heat out, since it is damn hot here and the car produce much more less power when it is hot. Hope I can make it to Sepang tomorrow, what time will you be there? I really want to meet other Skyline's owner... zapf 11-14-2001, 05:38 AM Originally posted by Slip I spose, if you did the windscreen and rear window as well. Tomie in Japan sells Lexen for Skylines.... :) R33 11-15-2001, 02:45 AM YCEE, i got the bonnet from GarageR S'pore for less than 4k including the paint job. It is 3.4 kg. Compare that to Electra's CF cover which is 4kg and cost 8k ex factory! Contact Lester at 02-5544911. My GTR currently has 614ps (aboutr 605hp). I have posted about the car somewhere in the forum under the title "Me Tarzan You Jane Me Gonna Whup Your Arse" (I think!). The track day yesterday was an absolute fun! Will post pics soon. R33, did you get your car modified in S'pore? How are the prices of parts in S'pore compare to Malaysia? Some of the prices quoted by Speedworks and Aerotech are really skyhigh!!! MarioGTR 11-15-2001, 04:42 AM Yes. Remove all unnecessary garbage from the boot area (spare wheel, etc). Remove battery and install a lighter race unit. Change boot, bonnet, front bumper, underskits, doors, rear quarter panels and front side fenders for carbon fibre items. Change all drive shafts and prop shafts to carbon items. Change all brakes, diffs and the clutch to carbon items. Change windows to lexan items. Remove seats and install race bucket(s). The OEM seats weigh in at almost 25Kg each! Remove noise suppression (sound deadening tar) from the underside of the vehilcle. Use light weight magnesium rims and competition tyres. Remove fuel tank and install race plastic/kevlar unit in its place. There is heaps more, but if you do this, you can drop the kerb weight from some 1650Kgs to some under 1250Kg's. Mario. www.exvitermini.com Slip 11-15-2001, 05:19 AM Damn I get wood over Carbon Fibre... :D Thanks Mario. spurner 11-15-2001, 06:52 AM Reece McGregor's R32 GTR is apparantly under 1200kg. :D TINDUCK RACING 11-15-2001, 07:04 PM Mario: Good to see you over on these forums......top sensible advice as usual.....thanks... (still pissed off at you dissing Stoke though ;) ) laters, Jon. P.S: ditching the twin bandpass sub box and amps makes a difference too.....:D :D :D R33 11-16-2001, 02:27 AM YCEE, yes, I did it in S'pore at GarageR. Save almost 30% on parts alone. Aerotech quotes unrealistic price even if you take duties into consideration. As for Speedworks, I won't even trust them with my Proton! If you want to do serious modding, my advice is go to S'pore! YCEE 11-16-2001, 12:44 PM R33, I went to GarageR today to pick up a fuel pump coz mine is giving up I think. BTW, they gave me a NISMO fuel pump for R34 and they said that is the same on the R33, it that true? GarageR really sells a lot of performance parts at a reasonable price, planning to get a PowerFC from them and remove that crappy S-AFC Speedworks installed. Actually I'm not the one buying that S-AFC, it is the previous owner, I would NEVER put a S-AFC in a GTR (other that a Racing ECU). Is Speedworks that BAD? I think they are OK but their prices are really f**king expensive!!! Where is a good place in M'sia to get a GTR serviced and checked? Darren 11-16-2001, 05:40 PM Lexan is great for a race car but hopless in the real world. It only last around one year in the sun the uv makes it craze. Wiper blades also scratch it, You need to cut and polish it every month if you use your wipers. These are the resons we stopped using it on boats. Speedfreak17 12-23-2001, 07:17 AM Light weight body parts like carbon Spoilers titaniumum parts !!! light weight body shell remove sound system http://www.pow.com.au/GTR.htm http://www.nismo.co.jp :smoker2: :smoker2: :smoker2: :smoker2: :smoker2: :smoker2: :o :o :o :o :o :o :o     :licker: :licker: :licker: :licker: :licker: vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
