280,000 miles on sunbird (pontiac)dario03 06-11-2003, 04:44 PM Does anyone here know anyone that has more than 280,000 miles on a pontiac 1991-96 sunbird. My 93 sunbird is right about there and I'm wondering if anyone beat me on that. And if you gotta lot of miles tell me what you did to it. When it was my moms and it was at about 265,000 it had a new exhaust system installed on it ($400). My uncle has done some wiring because water got in it and it didn't work twice for about 3 months both times but it runs fine and we defiently didn't baby it, drove it like crazy and it has the 3.1 ohv v6 140hp and 185 lbs torque which makes a car that only ways about 2350 pounds suprisely quick. Scott 02 06-12-2003, 10:03 PM damn thats alot of miles. i think your car is prolly #1 on high miles. Blue02R6 06-13-2003, 06:25 AM I've seen Dodge trucks with 500,000 miles on the original motor. I've heard about one with something like 1 mil. Those all had that cummins motor. Scott 02 06-13-2003, 09:01 AM No way, don't be comming in here talking about how great dodges loud ass cummins are. This is was to see if anyone has more miles than he does on his sunbird. That mean does anyone have a sunbird with more miles than he.. dario03 06-22-2003, 01:09 AM Yeah theres a lot of different vehicles with more miles of all sorts of makes my cousins broco has 400,000+ miles and a friend has a van with 600,000+ miles (or so claimed). But those are trucks and vans you see that a lot, but have you ever seen a sunbird or even a similar type of car with more miles. I got a 3.1 V6 91 Pontiac Tempest with 363000+ dario03 06-22-2003, 07:29 PM thats cool, if i drove more i think i could get there but im getting a new car as soon as i can figure out what i want. they should make engines like the one in my car more often they last forever. Did you do anything to that tempest like exhaust or engine swap. Did you do anything to that tempest like exhaust or engine swap. Engine is all original, the exhaust on the other hand is all new ( except for the headders, the pipes are custom fit ( about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch wider mandrel ( diameter ) and had the original cat and muffler replaced with a an exhaused made for a Baretta... hehehe if I ever have to get rid of my car the engine is being plucked out and installed in my next GM car... this engine is almost in the same condition as the day it was installed ( Except for the grime and roaddirt ( and surface rust) here and there on the engine parts.... I am actually thinking of having parts dipped to a metallic blue heheh I have ALOT of plans now to sum up the money.... I am gunna dump about $15-25 grand in upgrades, skirts engine mods, interior blah blah hehehe :) all and all its been a great car and I wouldn;t give it up for anything even a brand new car ( I am against ABS and airbags ) dario03 06-23-2003, 02:57 PM airbags suck, but abs kept me from hitting a car once i came within a inch from a camero but it sucked because right after i stopped a f-150 slammed into me and bubbled the trunk up it was opened at the window my uncle fixed the bumper and trunk with a sledge (lot cheaper then the $2000 the body shop wanted). If i had the money to keep the car i would but don't have the space or money i always wanted to put money into it for drag racing it would be easy to win money off of people with that car cause the way it looks. Since it only weighs 2344 pounds that car could be fast. BeoWulfz 06-23-2003, 03:41 PM not bad LOL I have been to that point.. i was hit on the right ( Passenger) quarterpanel turning a corner and I was blamed even tho I proceeded on a yello and somone ran it when it went red and hit me... the cops said I had to pay for the damage and when they showed up I said I aimt paying for crap take me to court ( I had an 86 prelude at the time) it did extensive damage to he rear quarter the rear passenger side window was shattered the trunk was also buckled the bumber half torn off and the molding destroyed.... I fixed the quarter panel with a 9 lbs sledge, a 2 foot 4x4 a 2 foot 2x4 half a gallon of bondo and parts from my donator car ( I got a car givin to me with a blown engine si I just took the window trunk lid and molding off oif it and put it on my car after about 2 weeks of work it looked good as new except for the banana peel paint job of trying to match 12 years of metallic grey with fading XD other then that I picked this car up for $1000, because the previous owner had it it was GUSHING oil I mean it would purge a gallon of oil in about 10-15 min and it happens only when its running.... so I presure washed the engine clean started it and watched oil spray from a silver cap that was screwed into the top end of the engine thats under the throttle/intake.... since the car is a DIS ignition setup there is no distributer cap so what happened to the distributer port well they plugged the port with a cheap VERY weak aluminum cap with a $0.19 o-ring the oring dried out and basically just eroded so since the seal was gone on the cap, the cap was floating there and the oil would spew :).. I asked a dealer how much they quoted me over $160 to repair it I am like $160+ for a $0.19 o ring hell with that I went out spent 4 hours searching for the Haynes Book for the tempest to find out they MISS LABELED it and marked it Baretta/Corsica then I saw another book that said Lumina/Baretta so I opened the package got yelled at by the cleark and found the book I wanted I got escorted out after I paid for the book O.o all and all after that little o-ring was replaced the car never dropped any oil.... I can run my car for 6 hours straight park it on a cardboard and pull it away and nothing leaks so hey if it aint broke why get rid of it :) yeah I get looked at from people because I have the year that they put the crap primer on it and list literally sheeting away ( my car is mostly ALL stock until I can get around to finding a whole saler who can supply me all the parts at the same time instead of ordering 50 parts from 50 different places and have to deal with 50 different dealers/wholesalers :) if yer curious heres a pic of my car :) I have Polished aluminum but theres no way in hell I am goingt o let them take the abuse Mother nature puts us through in canada so I threw the stock crap rims and caps for the winter http://www.backallyarts.com/general/albums/album06/01010033_G.sized.jpg here are my previous cars I had before 1991 Ford Taurus SHO ( LOADED ) http://www.backallyarts.com/general/albums/album06/sho2.jpg my 1989 Honda Civic ( it was Written off when hit by a drunk driver when it was parked at the side of the road) http://www.backallyarts.com/general/albums/album06/honda2.jpg and last but not least my Project car my 1979 Mercuri Capri that I had to sadly give up due to financial problems :'( spent (4 years, new 5.5ltr engine, interior and about $8000 in parts http://www.backallyarts.com/general/albums/album06/merc.jpg tdnyc 07-06-2003, 12:03 PM Question for all of you that have these cars or know people that have these cars that have hit 280K, 400K, 500K and 600K. How much work have they had? Blue02R6 07-06-2003, 12:40 PM Originally posted by Scott 02 No way, don't be comming in here talking about how great dodges loud ass cummins are. This is was to see if anyone has more miles than he does on his sunbird. That mean does anyone have a sunbird with more miles than he.. I didn't say they were great I said the motors last a while. The rest of the truck falls apart around it. Anyway, one of my pals has a sunbird with around 150k. With all of those being very hard driven miles. dario03 07-06-2003, 05:49 PM my car has had very little work, like i mentioned before it had a exhaust sytem put in about 20k miles ago and the air condition didn't work to well most of the time. My uncle has had to reset the computer once because of water damage but thats it. My uncles truck that had 290k miles on it had work done to pretty often but most of the time it was nothing big just a day or two of work. tdnyc 07-06-2003, 09:07 PM my car has had very little work, like i mentioned before it had a exhaust sytem put in about 20k miles ago and the air condition didn't work to well most of the time. BeoWulfz 07-07-2003, 10:57 PM Egines original on mine never been pilled or rebuilt... few probs here and there but nothing big the biggest prob with my car is GM's lack of brains when they painted 4 lines of cars with bad primer LOL half my cars paint is missing dario03 07-10-2003, 02:41 PM Originally posted by tdnyc Are you the first owner of the car? No, my Mom was so, I know what was done to it. I don't my Mom would hide something about the car from especially considering she just gave it to me because the car dealership laughed at her when she asked if she could trade it in. But I found a place that would give me $350 if i traded it in for a new car (blue book is like low $100 something if that)! tdnyc 07-15-2003, 07:08 AM You got a good Sunbird then. Its just unusual that a four cylinder car goes that long. But then again, GM's are good cars. dario03 07-23-2003, 03:22 AM Originally posted by tdnyc You got a good Sunbird then. Its just unusual that a four cylinder car goes that long. But then again, GM's are good cars. my car is a 6 cylinder dario03 08-03-2003, 03:12 PM Welp the legend which was my Sunbird is no longer mine. It was driven away by my uncles brother on Saturday August/02/2003. The odometer was at 280211 miles and it was a sad day indeed. But on the bright side I got a new car, not only new but the car that I've wanted for years a Chevy Impala and not just a regular one but a LS. So times are good and the miles will continue to go up on the old sunbird because the new owner will drive it to work a lot to keep miles down on his truck lease. So one day maybe it will surpass BeoWulfz's Tempest on miles although that would be a long shot. MrEd 08-04-2003, 05:27 PM It seems you have some experience with these cars would you mind taking a look at the post above, re: A few Questions, your comments would be appreciated. Cheers BeoWulfz 08-05-2003, 12:56 AM LMAO well that should be easy I the tempest is in the shops for a while... I am having the engine pulled and stored, the steelie rims disposed, the paint media blasted right down to the bare metal, the car will be repainted a Midnight black with a cherry red inset... I have a tatto of a howling wolf that will be airbrushed on the hood which will overlap the feders, the interior is being removed and cleaned up to like new the dash is being removed and ALL the lights are going to be replaced with originals the driver door/rear driver door and trunk are being replaced do to some butt much who can;t back out and hit it buckling them in causingt he rebar to compleatly pop off... while the engine is out it will be cleaned up tuned up the intake will be dipped includingt he alternator, manifold all the heater hoses are going braided metallic blue... there will eb a metallic blue CAI being installed all the brakes including the rotors/drums/calapers are goingt o be replaced with Groove and slotted touring brakes.. the rims will be replaced with a set of 3 peice touring with 215 40-R17 rims, headlights and tailights are being cleared and replaced the tailights I have are from a Chev corisca for the flatness instead of louvered and I am having the Chev simbol removed then redone black with 3 lights holes... the back window is being replaced with 4 layer ballistical glass cuz I keep popping them with my system tfor the windsheild its the original one that came with the car so the pits and scratch's are getting a little bad so thats being replaced... if your wondering yes its worth it for me because roight before I took it in and had EVERYTHING recertified on the caar the only problem found was a small rust hol inside the inner door jamb where I found out all tempsts and corsicas rust so iw ill have that whole section replaced with formed stainless steel.. I basically told them I don;t want to see the car untill its done and I don;t want it rushed dario03 08-06-2003, 12:37 AM thats really cool, i wish i could of kept my old car and done stuff to it and drag race people in it. it would be so funny to see that car fly down a drag strip because of the way it looked. vBulletin®, Copyright ©2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd.
