Ok i was browsing the neco forum and i run over this thread

this is a warning for honda owners and mecanics: the folowing pictures of can be very disturbing

Check this beauty out. Apparently the guy was showing off for a friend, and was at about 7k RPM in 5th when he decided to downshift to 4th (why, neither his friend nor I could tell you). However, instead of hitting 4th and merely ramming into the rev limiter, the close ratio gearbox causes him to slam it into SECOND. His friend mentioned that he "had never seen a tach swing that far past the redline", and estimated it to be somewhere in excess of 13,000 RPM before they heard a loud explosion and smoke came pouring out of the hood. Below is a link to the pictures and a few examples. By the way, the small metallic potatos were once pistons

Just to tell you, each one of those metal blobs isn't a piston - they're all pieces of a single piston. The top left shard in the guys hand was at one time the top half of a piston - you can make out where the piston pin used to go on the bottom fractured/chewed edge!

Some thing never change, horse throw shoes - cars throw rods...

It's an honest mistake. Quite a few engines are ruined by shifting into 2nd instead of 4th (ask this question in the SR20 community). I'm sorry for the guy, and sorry for the car.

but why in gods name did he want to shift into a lower gear when he was already close to redline? or at it for that fact? he STILL would have been bouncing off the rev limiter, and still would have damaged his engine im sure..

i agree....at 7000 rpm in 5th you never shift in 4th unless you have a bike or an F1 car....he brobably bought into the honda's can rev very high....which true compared to most engines but that does not make them rev like an F1 car

That's definitely an honest mistake(going to 2nd instead of 4th). I've done that myself on more than one occasion. The most memorable of times was when I was in a lane that was going to end just ahead and needed to accelerate hard to pass two cars and get over. I took it nearly to redline in third and went to shift into 4th. Instead I went to 2nd and mashedth gas for a second. Didn't blow anything, but the tires broke loose and I spun out of control and ended up on the wrong side of the road facing the wrong direction. My friend's car, that had been right behind me swerved when I spun and hopped a curb, wrecking two of his rims. I don't know why he wanted to downshift, that was dumb, but shifting into the wrong gear is understandable depending on the gearbox in question.

When I had my 1990 Integra with the b16 swap, I used to take that thing pretty high, especially on highway races that I knew I could win, and that I wanted to win.

My redline was at 10,000RPMs, and in second gear, at almost 10,000, I topped-out at about 81-84MPH(bouncing-off the limiter. I was able to downshift to second on the freeway during races that started at about 70MPH.

This guy obviously has no limiter (you can get the custom ECU for this for GS-Rs, which is dumb), and probably has done this sort of thing before...except he got in the right gear previously.

i did it once in my lude..but it wasn't showing off, i simply missed gears going from 3rd to 4th after a race, an i rev'd my 88 lude up to 8k an blew my radiator hose...other then that, the motor was fine.

it CAN be an honest mistake, but like neutrino said...downshifting an mashing it from 7k in 5th is pretty bad...maybe he was tryin for 6th? cuz...that'd make mor esense, then purposely tryin to hurt his motor.

do rsx's have 6th??? and of they thart must have been a a huge mistake...that is like me mistaking 1 for 5th....there is no way i can be that stupid....they are too far apart...

of couse now that i said it i'll probably prove that i can be that stupid and do it
