a/c issues

99 grand am se...The a/c compressor is coming on anytime i turn the 1-5 knob weather i turn the heat on or air...it comes on no matter if the a/c button on the control head is on or off...please help!!! Where do I start??

First, what setting are you putting it?

max vent, for recirculation, automatically turn on the compressor.

So does I think the windshield defroster.

It do so as to dry out the air.
