my 1997 grand am gt shut off while i was driving, but now will not start.

my car shut off while i was driving. i had it towed home. now, it will not even crank. you go to crank it and it sounds like it wants to, but there is something preventing it. can anyone help?

Check the battery connection. you shouln't be able to turn the wire. also it should be mostly oxidation free.
If dirty, clean it.
If loose, tighten.
Check the battery voltage, should be over 12.4V
If the voltage is lower than that charge the battery or get a jump start.
If it start, then mesure the voltage again. it should be over 13V, if not chance is that the alternator is dead, which explain why the car died while running and why you can't start it anymore.
