brakes on a 1500

Well ive looked at all the brakes threads and people thinking there isnt enough braking power on the 1500

K, i also agree there isnt enough brakes, i was working in a hilly city and coudl barely get the thing to stop at the light at the bottom of the hill, sometimes i have to put it in N to stop faster.

Now in the mean time my rotors are now warped. And yes i could replace them, but i never had brakes to begin with. I went 20k miles without warpage, so i really dont think replacing the rotors will get me better brakes, but will solve the pulsating problem, i get that.

So is there an upgrade i could do instead of buying all new brakes only to have them weak again? All the posts ive found the only reply is to "check yoru brakes" well ya no kidding....

it does sound like heat is the problem.have you checked brakes??
if they are low/thin they cant disapate the heat causing poor braking
check your linings,if there low replace the..........

well i changed out to summer wheels and tires, front brakes look ok, pads a little under half good even wear on the rotors

the rears i had to turn the adjuster at least 3 times before i had trouble sliding the drum back on. Drove around the block seems a little better.

But really is there a good upgrade one can do? I just watched a guy change out pads on a taurus and those rotors looked bigger than the ones on my van :(

Best upgrade is real good pads.

When you go to buy your brake pads ask for the best top of the line pads they have for you truck.
Do not use the elcheapo ones.
When you are running down a big hill/mountain and need to stop at the bottom do not caught dead stepping on cheap pads.:nono::nono:
The life you save may be your own or somebody elses.

Also make sure rear are good quality pads/shoes and adjusted up and working good.
If rotors are warped good time to replace trhem when replacing pads.

slotted or drilled rotors will help dissipate heat for more effective braking.

with the rear brakes with drums you need new drums every 30-40,ooomi. the drums wear out much fast in todays world.

In the past asbestos was used as a shoe liner material this was good for not wearing out the drums. the drums also were made of a higher quality metal less apt to wEAR or get distorted.

replace the drums. adjust the shoes until the adjuster causes the wheel to offer some resistance then back off about 3-4 clicks..check park brakes, adjust the cable if too tight/pedal too high..

when the drums are replaced you must replace the shoes...

when the shoes wear only at the top the drum is worn too much !

I know this post is old but I think a lot of people missed the point of your question, No rear brakes which leads me to believe that you either don't have full pressure out in the back or your brake linings need adjustment. Somewhere in this forum someone had the same problem, look into the Brake Pressure Module Valve (BPMV) or make sure you bleed the brakes well, You might need to borrow a good scan tool to activate the abs pump to get all the air out.

with rear drum brakes of todays world they need drum replacing every 40,ooomi to maintain proper braking effort.

the shoe material is NOW WEARING THE SOFTER DRUMS MUCH FASTER THAN MANY YEARS AGO.

asbestos is not used in the shoe material .

jordan most likely does not now how to determine when the drums are worn out. also he does not state what components were replaced.

jordan says "i had to turn the adjuster at least 3 times before i had trouble sliding the drum back on." this is a sure sign the drums are very worn !
