Code retrieval-'01 SLS

I am trying to access the codes and have had no luck.I have used the heater on and info up buttons to no avail. I believe our '94 SLS had a cover with connections over the data link port,this one does not. Is this my problem?

Press and hold the "off" and "info up" buttons together for a few seconds, and it will go into code reading mode. Then use the info up and off/on for yes and no. There is also a plug for a code reader under the dash near the parking brake pedal.
