1992 G30 5.7 Tune Up Specs

Can anyone tell me what the tune up specs are for a 1992 G30 Van with the 5.7 engine? I have no manuals with these.

I recently failed the emissions test during my state inspection. It was eventually exempted. Going by my tailpipe sound, I do not think it is running the best it could. The van was off the road for about 19 months with a dead trans.

Also, how do you observe the timing indicator mark on a van since you cannot look directly at it? Thinking about using a mirror.

Thanks,
Jim

As far as a tune-up. I'd replace all filters. Use a gage and check fuel pressure. Check for applicable trouble codes. Distributor cap and rotor--plugs and plug wires. The oem plugs are AC cr43ts-- gap .035. If you have throttle-body injection, the fuel pressure is around 10 psi. If mfi, it is higher, I'll have to double check. As far as changing the fuel filter, make sure there is no pressure on the system before you take anything loose. The timing spec is zero@ TDC . If you remove the fan shroud can you see the timing marks better? I guess I'd have to look at it?

A thumbs-up on link wouyld be nice, thanks.

A note on setting timing.
It has to be put in base time mode to check or set it.
Good Luck

As far as I know, base time mode is achieved by removing the wire on the back of the distributor. Is this correct?

There are no error codes or known problems other than poor fuel mileage. I realize that this vehicle will never equal my VW Bug's mileage however with a good tune up it will do the best that it can.

I've installed new OEM plugs, new pump in the tank, new fuel filter, air filter, PCV valve, all hoses and the belt. Tonight I would like to do the cap, rotor, wires and timing.

Yes
TAN AND BLACK SINGLE WIRE with a CONNECTOR somewhere.
But
May not be right on back of dist.
On pickups I have found it under the black plastic wire cover orver wires and fuel pump relay on heater housing.
Also when you have dist cap off chek dist shaft for excessive side play.
Good Luck

Ok, I checked the timing and found it exactly on zero@TDC. To do this I found the tan wire with black stripe next to the harness on the back of the distributor. It had a connector. Too see the timing marks, I removed the washer fluid reservoir, and gently pulled the straight section of the upper hose forward a few inches. Doing this gives you a decent line of sight down to the markings. Using an inductive type light I ran the wire back to the distributor and wrapped it into the loop on the oil dip stick handle to prevent the wire from falling into the fan blades. I took a paper towel soaked with Windex and reached down with my left hand and wiped off the indicator marks. Hopefully this will help the next guy that ventures into checking the timing on an early 1990s GM van.
