84-Z w/a SH*T-TON of problems

I have an 84Z with horrible gas mileage, and the answers to a few questions will help solve why my mpg is so bad

Problem 1:
Were all 3rd gen Camaro's, from 82-92 made with oxygen sensors?

I'm trying to figure out if I'm supposed to have an oxygen sensor or not.

My gas mileage has plummeted from 16 city / 23 highway to 11 city / 14 highway, and Ive been reading that a faulty O2 sensor can cause such drastic changes in mpg

Problem is that I crawled under my car and do not see any O2 sensor. I had my cat cut off, and am wondering if it may have been cut off too. I didn't see any wire though that might have been leading to it.

Problem 2:
Are 84 Camaro's set up so that the check engine light will flash the computer-fault code, as do the later models (ex, '88) fuel injected Camaro's do, when you turn the ignition forward and put the GM key in the computer port?

I had an 88 RS and you turned the ignition forward, put the GM computer key in the computer port, and it flashed the code... 34, 42, whatever. You could hear the computer kick on and make some noise.

Now with my 84Z, it doesn't do anything when I stick the GM key in.

As stated above, I am getting HORRIBLE gas mileage and knowing this code may help figure out whats malfunctioning (ex, O2 sensor)

Problem 3:
Someone one here also pitched the idea that a bad Computer would make the metering rods in the carb stay open all the way all the time

Does anyone know if this is true?

Will a faulty computer indeed make the metering rods do this??

If so, what is the easiest way to fix the metering rods??

I called Autozone, and instead of a rebuild of the carb, I thought about just buying a new one, but they are $499, so Im trying to fix the one I have, if indeed the metering rods can get stuck due to the ECU.

I am sorry to be posting so much, its just Im trying my best to get this figured out since my camaro is my daily driver til I get my truck fixed and the gas money is killing me.

Any help you all can give would me much appreciated.

1-Ok, so myself and Morley (2 years ago) have both said the O2. It will be on the drivers side collector pipe, you should be able to see it from the top without a problem. If you still can't see it, the wire shares the same harness as the temp gauge sending unit at the front of the drivers side valve cover, than runs back to the O2.

2-Yes, all OBDI GM's 81 and up should flash DTC's.

3-I have never heard of this. The E4MC quadrajet carburetor has been used in MANY GM applications. In time, they do need some attention. And if you're unfamiliar in adjusting them, one eadjustment can off set everything else. There are "special" gauges for this task. Ultimately, you haven't indicated any performance issues, so I'm running with the assumption the carb, other than maybe needing a cleanup is fine. The ECU in this car is VERY basic and would cause nowhere near what you may be accustomed to from a 85 and up fuel injected version. And if it did quit on you, again, there would be a perfomance issue.
