1993 Grand Am SE transmission problem

I have a 1993 Grand Am SE 3.3L 114,000 mi. From one day to the next it went from running fine to the transmission not wanting to upshift until it really winds out at high RPM. Once in high gear it is ok until it kicks down into 2nd( like passing or going up a hill) and then it wants to stay in 2nd gear even at 50-70mph. I changed the fluid and filter today but it is still doing it. Could it be the TCC selenoid?
Two days before this problem showed up I cleaned the MAF sensor, IAC motor and TPS. The car was running sluggish and sometimes stalling when coming to a stop. The MAF sensor had carbon build up on the wires so I used CRC Mass Air Flow Sensor Cleaner on it and the other parts I mentioned. The car ran better than it has in a year and engine wise it still does. Just the tranny is acting up now. Any thoughts?

The TCC would cause the transmission to lock on... I mean direct engine-wheel, no clutch, so when you go from park to drive the car would jump forward and the engine would stall, like on a transmission when you release the clutch without making slip.
OR
would cause the torque converter to not lock at higher speed, wasting fuel.

the torque converter replace the clutch slippage. The solenoid lock it so it don't slip.

As for the sensors, they are fragile, you could have damaged them. I'm not expert on it at all, but from what I read simply using the wrong product can kill them.

The sensors are not a problem and the engine is running fine. The problem is the upshifts in the transmission. It does not surge forward and stall when going from park to drive. I unplugged the TCC wire and the car ran the same. It stays in 1st gear until @ 30mph then shifts hard into 2nd where it stays until @ 50mph where it shifts into 3rd. Not a BIG deal there as it almost acts normal. It is when you give it gas like pulling out into traffic it shifts hard 1-2 and will stay in 2nd unless you hit @ 75-80mph then it will shift into 3rd. OR if you are cruising along in 3rd and it kicks down into 2nd to pass or when going up a hill, then it will stay in 2nd unless you get it going 75-80mph again. Once stopped it downshifts fine into 1st with no stalling since I cleaned the MAF.

I'ld suspect the MAF or the TPS
the MAF is very fragile.

As for the TPS, I don't know if it's a potentiometer based or another kind, but if it's pot based it need grease, which the cleaner could have removed.

I'ld try to have the code read, so does the live data from the MAF and TPS

Is that the only code?
12 simply mean that the ecu got no rpm reading (the engine is off, that's normal, so not a real code)

I'ld still check the MAF and TPS...

Yep, 12 flashed 3 times and I figured that was the meaning. We tried 3 more times and the same "12" was the only thing that came up.
I am going to replace the TPS this weekend and see what happens.

You might be wasting your time with the TPS. You'll get a separate error code for a TPS out of range or even an intermittent open circuit.

I'd advise checking the vacuum modulator on the front of the trans case, and verify that there is a good source of manifold vacuum to the modulator. Despite the "sophisticated" ECM of the '93 (OBD1) and shift solenoids, the trans line pressure is still governed by the modulator and it's this line pressure which overrides the spools and forces them to move in conjunction with the solenoids.

You should also verify that the oil is clean and the filter isn't clogging, and that the filter seal is intact. Another good test is to connect a pressure gauge to the line pressure test port on top of the trans and read pressure in the various ranges (the gauge must withstand up to 350 PSIG).
