2001 GA 3400 Transmission?

OK, I've got an 01 grand am with 226k miles on it. The transmission was last serviced at about 210k (new filter/fluid). Today I had been sitting in park at an idle for a few minutes, when I put it into drive, it clunked really loudly and kind of shook the whole care for a second. I quickly put it back into park, then after waiting for a minute put it back into drive again. Same thing. I started driving, and the first 2 or 3 shifts afterwards were quite hard, and then it started shifting normally after that. I'm thinking that the tranny is going south on me. Any words of wisdom? Or am I right in thinking that the tranny is hosed?

Update
It seems to not be as bad in the morning before the transmission warms up, but as it gets later in the day, or I have driven it for a while it gets bad quickly. It begins to shift VERY hard and it also slips some when going up hills. I've put enough $$ into this thing already, it's been a good car but I'm thinking I'd rather say good bye to it than sink money into an new tranny. Anyone want a slightly used GA?
