I'm just curious what people think about forced induction methods for the new Renesis. I personnally like the idea of a supercharger because of the lack of punch down low.

I've also heard that the RX-7 Turbo had so many problems that Mazda is hesitating bringing a forced induction rotory to market again.

What does everyone else think?

Turbos do add complexity and complications.
Adding a S/C for some low end torque would
not be a bad idea, though. It does need it.

Those 2003 Cobras are pretty cool rides.
I need to test drive an RX-8 and see how
it compares with the late model Mustangs
(seems they were designed for midgets).

how do you even know you can fit a turbo in there? from what i hear its a pretty small space in that engine bay.

supercharge is already being sold in japan. That company already had it planning even before the rx8 was being sold in japan. They had hard time fitting the turbo and SC was the perfect choice they thought. I forgot the name of the company, I'll look up and put it here.

i am a big fan of RX-7s and i like the performance of the RX-8, but i really hate to admit it but i have drove one and i think my stock BUICKS are faster....i am serious i love the RX line of cars but they got to give it some more Horses under the hood!! .... sad part is i wish my Buicks could handle like this Mazda!!

ok in response to kaoru's cobra, you couldn't beat a modded RX-8 with a Cobra. Cobras are trashy cars. in response to theHemi, Mustangs are also trashy cars, if it is american, it sucks

should point out that turbos generally need the engine to run at lower compression ratios.
the roatary in the rx-8 isn't exaclty high on torque in the first place.
adding a turbo would actually mean that you end up with even less low end torque.
that's why the rx-7 used tiny sequential turbos, so that one is always spinning before you get 'full-on' boost.

super charger or turbo charge?
not sure.
i thought that mazda were toying with using the twin sequential again.
after all, from what i gather, actual recorded mpg for the rx-8 isn't far off from the figures of the rx-7.
a turbo wouldn't make that much diference.

i'm indiferent about the whole import/american thing. I do hate mustangs though, because idiots get the V6 model and think they are the shit. Cobra is not bad, but it's mostly built to drive in a straight line. I've driven an RX-8, and I was pretty impressed, but it really is missing a bit of power down low. They should really upgrade the drivetrain, they are losing a lot of power from the engine to the wheels. I think it would have been cool if they had made it a 2 seater, and instead of having the rear seats put the engine there, but that's just a radical thought. definetly SC it for that low end torque.

I test drove the RX-8 at this year's Mazda Rev It Up, it may not be as fast as the FD but it definately shows its true colors in corners...

There are rumors about a turbocharged RX-8 stock from the factory, yet I haven't found more info about it but it does sound serious and if this is true then I would wait for that model to come out.

The hydrogen rx-8 is going to be turbocharged.

Hydrogen?! Is that even street legal? I haven't seen any Hydrogen-powerd cars around here!

Atkins Rotary will prob develop a S/C for the Renesis.. They sell 5 and 6" models for 12A's and 13B's.

Personally, I would go with the S/C and pay attention to the pulley drive system. The only thing I would have a concern with is excessive eccentric shaft wear. However- turbo's have far more designs and products out there, and mapping is a breeze with the right tuner.

On a side note- I saw a bad ass Rx8 at Rotorfest in NJ this past weekend. It had a 20B engine in it, built by Acosta Racing. Noice!

The RX8 begs for twin turbo....and from what I understand, they have worked out several forced induction options for it, and will be producing one of them eventually. The only thing I worry about is that RX8s aren't selling well....so Mazda may be apprehansive to release another version. If they do it will most likely be in limited production, like the MS Protege.

Lets get this straight: the hydrogen renesis rx-8 and the turbo rx-8 are different models.

But anyway, more on the rx-8 turbo. The turbo is electircally assisted meaning that it works just like a normal exhaust driven turbocharger. The concept behind this rx8's engine is fairly much the same as the 3rd genereation rx-7's twin turbo system, where a small turbocharger is used while the second turbo is pre spun for high boost. With the rx8, instead of a small turbo, the elecric motor gives low end boost by controlling the shaft speed and the turbo becomes exhuast driven once there is enough ehxaust gas.

this might help:http://www.turbodyne.com/product2.html

The RX8 begs for twin turbo....

Heeeeeck ya! But I say screw the tt set-up ad go for a big single turbo set-up....maybe the equivalent of a SP-63. That would produce some big numbers...It's small enough that it spools up quick, but It's big enough to produce huge numbers! And yes, it will fit, you just have to do a little coaxing, maybe talk to your friends Mr. Hammer and Mr. Hack Saw!

Road & Track I think it was, was doing a thing on the new Mazdaspeed. They said that the American division of Mazda has put a super and hydrolic turbo on the rx-8. Right now they are messing with both seeing which is better, cost less, ect. They also said that the rotary is perfect for hydrogen, so hydrogen powered rx-8s could be out as early as 2006.
