check engine diagnosed as Mass Airflow System error. Can some give me some insight on how to troubleshoot problem or should I go to a qualified mechanic?

The code may help us here, what was it, sometimes the connection is bad or the maf, or it is dirty, and there are other issues that can affect it, aslo what are the performance issues, you have left out a lot of info!
